Somewhere in Romania, near to the Hungarian border, there is a small town called Sacueni, in the Bihor County. This Spanish girl from Madrid did not know about its existence until a few months ago. But now, destiny has wanted to bring me to Sacueni to be able to know and write about this wonderful place.

Located in the northwestern part of Bihor County, the city of Sacueni is the fourth city in Bihor and the largest one in the northwest of the county. In the Middle Age, Sacueni already had the Rank of city, but over the years and until the last years it was only a commune. It was in 2004 when Sacueni became a city again. But by the name of  “city of Sacueni” we also understand the administratively belonging villages.

The administrative territory of Sacueni is located at a distance of 43 kilometers from the city of Oradea, that is in the north, and 21 kilometers from Marguita, the nearest city, located to the east. The city is bordered on the west by Hungary.

The population of Sacueni is quite varied, wich gives the town a certain cultural wealth. According to the census carried out in 2011, the population of Sacueni amounts to 11.526 inhabitants. Most of the inhabitants are Hungarian (74,54%). The main minorities are the Roma (15,2%) and Romanians (6,37%). For 3,83% of the population, ethnicity is unknown. From the confesional point of view, the majority of the inhabitants are Reformed (57,29%), there are also minorities of Roman Catholics (21,63%), Orthodox (6,61%), Baptists  (3,76%), Pentecostals (2,13%) and Greek Catholics (1,82%). By the way, for 4,25 of the population, confesional affiliation is unknown.

This writter lives in a big city but loves  nature with all her soul, so let me tell you about the natural wealth of Sacueni:

The climate of Sacueni is conditioned by its location in the western part of the country, in the low región of the Western Plain. Other factors that conditions the city´s climate are the peculiarities of the air masses and te heterogeneity of the underlying surface. So, the climate of Sacueni is characterized by mild winters and not very hot summers. The thermal excesses are rare, wich corresponds to a moderate continental temperate climate.

There are two rivers in Sacueni, both in the low and in the high plain. On the low alluvial plain, the river Ier carries its wáter.  The high plain is drained by th Sânicolau river. Both the flora and the fauna on the territory of Sacueni are specific to the plain región, where forest, grassy and meadow vegetation are found here. Due to the human intervention, manifested by the expansión of agricultural crops, there were important changes in the vegetation, the areas with natural decreasing in favor of crop plants. In the space afferent there are animals such as wolf, fox, wild boar, deer, squirrel, birds such as blackbird, pheasant, crow and hawk, to which are added the singing birds, such as cuckoo, pupa and nightingale.

Beyond the natural beauty of  Sacueni, this city differs of the rest of towns of Bihor County and that is because Sacueni stands out for its historical monuments. You can find a feudal fortress, the Stubenberg Castle  and a monument, that is in Liberty Square, in the center of the city. Sacueni´s  architecture and art are also remarkable, there are three churches! the Roman Catholic Church, the Reformed Church and the Orthodox Church. And if you want some chilling and entertaining time, here, in Sacueni there are some special places where you can find that, such as the thermal bath, the local Theatre or the Wine cellars. Isn´t it sound exciting?

For all this, Sacueni is something that cannot be missing in your bucket list. What are you waiting for?
